Russian Silver Nielloed Coin Purse Moscow, circa 1900
With rounded corners, overall nielloed with scrolling foliage, displaying a central scene of a Moscow fortress, the reverse with further scrolling decoration in niello. Inscribed in French 15th of August 1904, the interior fitted with silk compartments for coins (worn).

Niello was the technique of blackening with powdered alloys an engraved area to provide a contrast with shining precious metal. It was used extensively in Moscow before the revolution and earlier in the ancient town of Velikii Iustiuk.
