Made by the prominent Moscow silversmiths, Khlebnikov during the reign of Tsar Alexander III, the set comprises a pair of ovoid salt shakers, with a matching cylindrical moutardier and a parcel-gilt spoon. The top of each shaker is pierced and screws on to the base, which is weighted with solid silver, enabling the shakers to remain upright to minimize spills.
By Ivan Khlebnikov and Sons, Moscow, 1888. Stamped with maker’s Cyrillic initials, 84, for the Russian silver standard, the Moscow town mark, and the date of 1888 on the mustard pot.
Mustard pot: 2 in. (5.1 cm.) high; salt shakers: 1 ¼ in. (3.2 cm.) high.

By 1888, when this set was made, the firm of Khlebnikov was well established in Moscow. Founded in the ancient capital by Ivan Petrovich, a jeweler in 1870, the company flourished during the reign of Alexander III and received the Imperial Warrant from the Tsar in 1881. Known for its innovative and whimsical designs, under the guidance of Ivan’s four sons Mikhail, Alexei, Vladimir and Nikolai, the firm won prizes in numerous All Russian and international Exhibitions. In 1896, the Imperial court commissioned Khlebnikov over all its competitors, including Fabergé, to create the frame for the Iconostasis of the Annunciation Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin.
