Large Russian Silver Nicholas I Basket, St. Petersburg, 1830

In the Romantic taste, this elegant Russian silver-gilt basket was made in the imperial capital of St. Petersburg in 1830 during the era of Tsar Nicholas I. The interior is lobed and gilded while the exterior is decorated with a band of repoussé, densely clustered roses, further enhanced with an outer floral edge and engraved swing handle. the bowl is raised on a fluted pedestal foot flanked by two floral bands.

Stamped on the base and interior with the crossed anchor and scepter hallmark for St. Petersburg, 84 for the Russian silver standard, the bowl with the assay master’s mark for Mikhail Karpinsky (active 1825-38) above the date of 1830.

11 1/8 in. (28.2 cm) high including upright swing handle; 11 in. (. cm) long; 8 1/4 in. (21 cm) wide.
