“The Thousand and One Nights,” a collection of folk tales from the Middle East and South Asia, translated into French in 16 volumes by Joseph-Charles Mardrus. These tales, probably of Indian origin, were transmitted to Persia where they were written down. They are famous for their narrative framework, in which Scheherazade tells stories to King Shahryar for a thousand and one nights to avoid death.

14.5 x 22.5 cm

All 16 volumes in uniform, original brown leather spine & 1/4 binding with marbled coloured paper boards.

Condition: bindings fair, leather worn in places, clean but browned pages, intact. Viewing for condition and details is available by video if requested.

Provenance: Private Collection, Netherlands, thence by descent.
