French Napoleon III Gothic-revival Silver Crucifix Pendant, mid 19th century

This beautiful pectoral cross or crucifix of finely design oxidized silver was created in Paris, possibly by Froment Meurice, the famous Second Empire French court jeweler. In the Gothic revival style, the center is applied with the raised figure of Jesus Christ on the cross, the arms of the cross terminating in symbols of the four evangelists within quatrefoil frames: winged lion for Saint Mark; angel for Saint Matthew, winged ox for Saint Luke and an eagle for Saint John. Attached to an oval suspension ring. In original fitted leather moiré silk lined traveling case.

Paris, mid 19th century, Stamped with illegible maker’s marks on base of cross and suspension ring, as well as French silver hallmarks on sides of crucifix, and on ring.

5 ¼ x 3 in. (13.3 x 7.6 cm) including ring; 64.5 grams
